Artist
Thyra Weiss
Thyra Weiss explores ways of combining painting with weaving and other textile techniques. Defining herself as a multidisciplinary artist, she considers painting her foundation and weaving her primary medium. The textile works emerge as collaborations between herself and the material, where their respective wills meet to create something entirely new.
Her process often involves grasping tangled thoughts with her hands and weaving them into forms she can understand, projecting the inner world outward. In her practice three components are often present: the earth, the figure and the air. Weiss wants to create from scratch, using raw materials such as untreated cloth, liquid ink, and reused materials. She is drawn to the texture and variability of the ground and feeling.
The figure is more or less present, it is human but abstract. Faceless figures seek our eyes, wanting to tell with their bodies the things a face not always is capable of. The air, space and the invisible between surfaces are visualized. How does a burning gaze feel on the skin, and what does it look like through the air? There’s a lot the eye cannot perceive.
Alongside her textile and painting practice, Weiss also creates illustrations, including work for children’s literature and album covers for musicians.
Thyra Weiss (b. 1998) lives and works in Stockholm. She is currently completing a BA in Textile Art at Konstfack, graduating in 2026, and recently spent a semester on exchange at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK).
