Elsa Ekman

Elsa Ekman has been creative for as long as she can remember. Even in her childhood games, she saw the world through the eyes of an amazed child - like Tummelisa on a journey of discovery among rocks, leaves, and secret nooks. A piece of bark became a bowl, a patch of sand a whole world. This gaze, filled with curiosity and imagination, lives on in her artistry today.

Her work moves in a landscape between existence, life forms, and mysticism. Ekman seeks the uncertain, that which has not yet taken its final form. She works on several pieces at once, building layer upon layer: watercolor, collography, collage, colored pencils, and oil pastels. She cuts, transforms, and lets something new grow out of what has already been created. Even in her stoneware sculptures, there's this appeal to let go of control, to be surprised.

Ekman is in constant emotional motion with her work. They are born from her with a force that cannot be held back. Like fragments of paintings, they form a whole - a wave motion that only reveals itself when you take a step back. These are works that seem to pulsate, almost sound, through their fields of color and organic forms. Soft, processed, but at the same time open and alive.

Elsa Ekman (b. 1986) lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden. Her education and training include studies in art at Santa Monica College in 2011 and Artistlab Academy from 2022 to 2024, with Peter Sköld as her mentor. Elsa made her public debut as an artist in 2025. She explores a wide range of materials and techniques and creates in her studio at her family home in Hemfosa, just outside Stockholm, as well as at the ceramics workshop Ateljé 7 in Stockholm.
