With an artisanal bachelor degree in clothesmaking from Turku, Finland, followed by a master in textiles from Konstfack, Sweden in 2007, Minna Palmqvist’s work aims to reveal and go behind the facades of the western neo liberal structures of society at large, and the rules and ideas upheld by the fashion and beauty industry more in depth.
The problematics with the female body being seen as an object there to please others is present in most things she makes, and in her more recent work, Palmqvist has started to visibly extend her field of creative investigations into dealing with working under pressure; highlighting the stress and unethical circumstances under which clothing and commersial objects are produced and consumed. But also highlighting the state of emergency of the world in general.
No matter if the result is a wearable garment, a wall hung mirror or an art installation, Minna Palmqvist has been showcased internationally, alongside fashion legends like Hussein Chalayan, Maison Martin Margiela and Rei Kawakubo in museums such as Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (NL), NoMA (US), Torun Center of Contemporary Art (PL) and EMMA (FI). In 2023 she will be a part of fashion exhibition ”Beautiful Repair – Mending in art and fashion” at Copenhagen Contemporary (DK).
